Prague, 17 October 2017 – The transition network for broadcasting with the new DVB-T2 television standard now covers two additional significant regions. České Radiokomunikace (CRA) is beginning to broadcast in the Eastern Bohemia and Moravia-Silesia regions, namely from the Černá hora a Lysá hora towers. The network now covers 83.1 % of all households. CRA continues to cover the Czech Republic with the new terrestrial broadcasting network, which will be the only free television broadcasting service available.

The transition to DVB-T2 is necessary due to the need of seizing some of the television frequencies that are planned to be allocated for “5G” mobile data networks after year 2020. About 60 % of all households subscribe to terrestrial broadcasting in the Czech Republic. It is the only free platform available for viewers. Parallel broadcasting, which CRA began operating in compliance with the approved government strategy and amendment of the Electronic Communications Act, has a very important social dimension, as it gives households the opportunity to prepare for the new broadcasting standard in advance. If people are not currently looking to purchase a new TV or set-top-box, they do not have to worry, because the current DVB-T standard of broadcasting will be available until 2020. This gives viewers plenty of time to purchase new units. However, if households are in the market for a new television, they should look to purchase a unit that supports the new DVB-T2 / HEVC standard. An updated list of supported television units can be found www.dvbt2overeno.cz. As of today, the list contains more than 1,000 items.

By the end of 2017, we expect to have 95 % of all households covered with the final coverage of the DVB-T2 transition network reaching 99 % of all households. Viewers can now tune in to 14 programmes with additional programming becoming gradually available.

Broadcasting from the Černá hora a Lysá hora towers is planned to start 17 October 2017.

Technical parameters:

Černá hora: 28. k, horizontal polarization, power ERP 100 kW

Lysá hora: 28. k, horizontal polarization, power ERP 25 kW
