CRA to renovate Žižkov TV Tower “Tower Babies” sculptures

For more than 15 years, České Radiokomunikace (CRA) has provided a home for David Černý's “Tower Babies”, an extravagant tourist attraction, on the Žižkov TV Tower.

Prague, 2. October 2017 – For more than 15 years, České Radiokomunikace (CRA) has provided a home for David Černý's “Tower Babies”, an extravagant tourist attraction, on the Žižkov TV Tower. They will be temporarily taken down. The sculptures will undergo thorough inspection and repair, if necessary, and return to the tower in spring 2018. CRA expects to invest more than one million crowns into the renovation.

There are ten “Tower Babies” sculptures installed on the Žižkov TV Tower. They were first installed in May 2000 during the celebration of Prague becoming the European City of Culture. The installation was temporary. Exactly 16 years ago, the sculptures were permanently installed on the tower.

“The Žižkov TV Tower.is one of the most popular buildings in Prague and David Černý's sculptures only make it more attractive. CRA operates the tower and the data centre with primary focus on the security of not just services, but the entire facility. Thus, we are having the sculptures undergo a comprehensive overhaul and will then return them to the tower,” says Martin Gebauer, Managing Director of CRA, to whom the tower belongs.

CRA inspects the sculptures and performs smaller repairs on a regular basis – twice a year. Due to the thorough inspection and renovation of the “Tower Babies” sculptures, all of the installations had to be taken down. Each sculpture will be assessed, repaired and cleaned. The anchoring to the tower body will also be restored.

One by one, the sculptures will be removed between October 2-10, 2017. The dismantling will not affect any tower services or operations. For safety reasons, public access to the tower may be limited during the dismantling and re-installation process.

The sculpture frame is made of engineering steel with 2 mm glass fibre shell covering some of the sculpture. One sculpture weighs 120 kg and is 3.4 m long, 2.4 m high and 1.2 m wide.
