The largest data centre in the Czech Republic
The planned data centre will be located in renovated premises of decommissioned radio transmitters in Prague-Zbraslav. After the DC TOWER data centre at Prague’s Strahov, with a capacity of 500 server racks, the back-up centre at Žižkov, and regional centres in Brno, Pardubice, and Ostrava, a sixth centre will be built. With a capacity of 2,000 racks, it will be the currently largest data centre in the country.
České Radiokomunikace’s data centres are secure spaces for clients’ servers, data, as well as equipment. The highly secured buildings boast powerful cooling, power supply from independent branches, back-up diesel aggregates with priority fuel supply, as well as round the clock security. Equipment is placed in lockable cabinets (known as racks) which are physically separated from other clients’ equipment. In addition to hosting services, including custom-designed private rooms, České Radiokomunikace provides public and private cloud services in its data centres. Building a data centre is, however, not the only strategic investment planned by the company.
“We are currently looking around the Czech market and in neighbouring countries for acquisition opportunities that would make sense to us. Primarily it should be telecommunication or data infrastructure providers. We have identified several potential targets,” says Miloš Mastník, in an interview for ČTK.
The future is in digital broadcasting
Digital radio broadcasting is undergoing continuous development of the network and of the programmes of the stations transmitted, delivering to listeners not only a better listening experience but also additional services, such as graphic display of information accompanying the broadcast content.
Whether České Radiokomunikace bids for a licence for DAB+ digital radio broadcasting will depend on the specific conditions of the tender that the Czech Telecommunication Office (ČTÚ) plans to call next year; however, it is very likely. The tender is currently undergoing comment procedure. One of the requirements is a legislative change permitting one broadcaster to transmit more than two nationwide radio stations, as the law currently stipulates. Otherwise, DAB networks might be left nearly empty.
“We see great potential in DAB+. Firstly, the obligation to fit all new cars with DAB tuners has been in place since last year, and furthermore, there is a market on which around 250,000 radios are sold every year. Digital broadcasting is also twelve time as energy intensive as FM broadcasting,” explains Miloš Mastník.
České Radiokomunikace already distributes DAB+ radio signal for the public Czech Radio and has recently launched eight new transmitters. Its network currently covers over 95% of the country’s population.
