CRA introduces TV reception on mobile phones via new 5G Broadcast technology without connection to mobile network or wifi for the first time in the Czech Republic
CRA continues to test the 5G Broadcast technology, which enables the transmission of multimedia content to mobile phones without the need to connect to a mobile network or Wi-Fi. It can thus deliver information even in areas where the mobile signal does not work.
5G Broadcast is a new broadcasting standard that takes advantage of DVB-T2. It is the most efficient and energy-saving way to use spectrum for TV broadcasting. It can deliver multimedia content to a mobile phone without using a mobile network or a SIM card. CRA has been testing 5G Broadcast since 2022, which is significantly advancing as the first mobile phones capable of effectively receiving such broadcast content have appeared.
'We see 5G Broadcast technology as one of the future paths for terrestrial digital television broadcasting. It will enable mobile phones to receive broadcasts, even in areas without regular mobile network coverage, which enhances both the ability to provide information in crisis situations and, for example, allows viewers to watch TV content while travelling', says Miloš Mastník, CEO of CRA. 'At the same time, TV content will become more accessible to younger generations, who are accustomed to watching everything on their mobile screens', adds Mastník.
The Czech Republic is thus becoming the next European country where 5G Broadcast is piloted, which can be received on regular mobile phones with SW modification. CRA is currently testing 5G Broadcast from the Prague Žižkov transmitter. The test is taking place in the duplex gap of the 700 MHz band, on the 742 MHz frequency with a power of 32 kW. The test stream includes broadcasts of CT 24 and CNN Prima News and covers Prague and part of Central Bohemia.
